Hearts All Whole
Performed with Allison Holst-Grubbe, soprano.
This program started as a collection of our favorite pieces to perform, which often happen to be German lieder or 20th-century American art songs. While sifting through selections from this repertoire, a thread began to form, connecting songs with texts and accompaniments that narrate emotional journeys using nature metaphors, or in which the natural world helps to resolve those journeys.
Hearts All Whole is an intimate program featuring songs by Franz Schubert, Clara Schumann, Gustav Mahler, Franz Liszt, Ned Rorem, Charles Ives, and Samuel Barber, as well as piano works by Frédéric Chopin and Claude Debussy.
